Public access scheme guidance for barristers.
A public access barrister is a registered barrister who has received training to accept instructions from the public directly, and without the intervention of a solicitor or other qualified professional.
In all his/her professional work a registered barrister is required to abide by the professional code of conduct. This code of conduct is contained in the current UK Bar Handbook published by the Bar Standards Board. The Bar Standards Board is the statutory regulator of the Bar of England and Wales under the supervision of the Legal Services Board.
Lay client(s) using a public access barrister may find it useful to read the public access guidance for barristers. This is so that they may learn the limits of the scheme and acquaint themselves with the recommended guidance by which a barrister operates when undertaking their public access work. This will help the lay client understand what the public access barrister is allowed to do under the scheme.
Here is the public access guidance for barristers.
The Bar Standards Board website gives you information on how to instruct a barrister.
At Tennyson Chambers our Counsel only undertake public access work on a privately funded basis. We do not accept legally aided cases on a direct access or public access basis. Counsel can only accept instructions from you in a legal aid matter via a solicitor in these chambers.
